Working Together | James P. Lewis | Book Review | Book Summary
Vol. 19, Issue 43

Working Together

12 Principles for Achieving Excellence in Managing Projects, Teams, and Organizations
By: James P. Lewis
204 pp.
Beard Books 2002
Review by: Lydia Morris Brown

Alan Mulally, executive vice president of The Boeing Company has, during his tenure, contributed to Boeing’s world-changing commercial jets—the 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, and the 777. The tremen¬dous engineering achievement of the 777, as well as its commercial success, was proof to Mulally that the collaborative principles he implemented throughout the airplane’s development were key. “Working Together” was a new approach for Boe¬ing—radically different from any initiative it had previously used to design airplanes.

James P. Lewis offers Working Together as the best of management practice for managing projects, teams, and organizations. He illustrates how Mulally’s prin¬ciples form a comprehensive framework for effective and sustainable visioning, planning, problem-solving, risk management, systems integration, communica¬tion, measurement, profitability (while having fun), and leadership. And, he demonstrates how this prin¬ciple-based practice forms the perfect impetus for setting organizations free from the “fire fighting” and quick fixes so many employ in their attempt to sur¬vive turbulent times.
